Quick answer: Follow the manual for the torch you own. Most cutting torch manufacturers’ official manuals tell you to close the oxygen valve first. Modern Welding, the standard trade school textbook, teaches fuel gas (acetylene) first. Both methods are used safely every day. The bigger risk isn’t the order of the valves. It’s skipping or rushing the shutdown entirely.
Now here’s the full story, because the short answer hides a debate that has been running for fifty years.
Why can’t welders agree on torch shutdown?
Ask ten welders which valve to close first, and you’ll start an argument. Go read any welding forum thread on the topic. You’ll find people with 30 years of experience telling each other they’ve done it wrong their whole careers. Some were taught acetylene first, no exceptions. Others were taught oxygen first and can explain exactly why. Both sides are certain. Both sides had certain instructors.
Here’s the uncomfortable part: the manufacturers and the textbooks don’t agree with each other either.
The case for closing the acetylene valve first
Kill the fuel, and the flame dies. Simple. There’s a small pop when the flame goes out, but it happens outside the torch, and it’s harmless. This is what most trade schools in Canada and the US have taught for decades. It’s the method in Modern Welding, the textbook used in high school and trade programs across North America, and in the classic Oxy-Acetylene Handbook that trained generations of welders.
There’s a practical bonus too. Shut the oxygen first, and you get a smoky, fuel-only flame that throws black soot flakes around the shop. Old timers call them parachuters. Nobody likes cleaning them up.
The case for closing the oxygen valve first
The oxygen-first camp says that pop is the problem. Some manufacturers’ manuals warn that closing the fuel valve first can cause a pop that throws carbon soot back into the torch, and over time, that soot can clog the gas passages and the flashback arrestors. Their emergency procedure points in the same direction: if a flame ever starts burning inside the torch, the manual says to shut the oxygen off first, immediately, because without oxygen, nothing can keep burning inside the torch body.
There’s a second argument as well. If your fuel valve has a slow leak, closing it last means you’ll see a small flame that won’t die. Now you know your torch needs service before that leak becomes a real problem.
Both arguments make sense. That’s exactly why the debate has lasted this long. Your torch manual is the tiebreaker. The sequence you were taught in school may contradict the company that built the tool in your hands.
The valve order was never the real danger
Step back from the argument for a second and look at what it assumes.
It assumes a person, at the end of a cut, calmly closing two valves in the right order. Every time. At 7 a.m. and at the end of a double shift. When the job went smoothly and when it went sideways. When they’re alone in the shop, and when three other things need their attention right now.
That’s the real story hiding in those forum threads. Scroll past the valve debate, and you find the confessions. The shop owner who left the bottles on overnight, and the employee who walked in the next morning, found it smelled wrong. The welder set a still-pressurized torch on the bench and went to lunch. The guy who felt a poof at his wrist mid-cut looked down and saw flame coming out of the valve on his own torch handle.
None of those incidents came from picking the wrong valve order. They came from the fact that torch shutdown depends entirely on a human remembering to do it, doing all of it, and doing it in sequence. Thousands of times a year. Forever.

The shops with the best hot work records don’t win the valve-order debate. They make it matter less. A few habits show up over and over:
They follow the manual, not the mentor. Whatever torch brand is in the shop, that manufacturer’s shutdown steps go into the written procedure and onto a laminated card at the station. New hires learn the shop standard, not whatever their last foreman swore by.
They treat a live, unattended torch as a near miss. A pressurized torch sitting alone on a bench gets logged and talked about, the same as a dropped load or a lockout mistake. That sounds strict until you remember that pooled fuel gas is how shops burn down.
They shrink the window where human error can live. This is the big one. Flashback arrestors and check valves exist because nobody trusts a human to catch a flashback in the half-second it takes to travel up a hose. The same thinking is now reaching the torch handle itself.
